Edo Period Kyogen Theater Karura (Garuda) Mask, donated in the 19th Century by the prominent collector, Dr. C.G. Weld to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Karura is a mythical fire-breathing bird-human creature from Buddhist-Hinduist mythology. A fine and rare example. Wood with lacquer. 8 x 6.25 inches, 20.5 x 16 cm.

In fact, this was purchased in Japan in the 1960's directly from the parade participant who was using it, after the parade was over. A wood okimono of a standing Daruma, his bare feet parted and body slightly twisted as his robe whips about him. Daruma holds an ivory whisk in his left hand, the carving detailing his earrings, eyelids, and the serene expression capturing some moment during the beginning of his nine-year meditative state. Along his back is the carved signature of Megoro Sokyo. This okimono is in very good condition with no damage or restoration. Height: 4 ¾" Meiji Period. Japan

A fully carved boxwood okimono of a seated priest with a jui (scepter) carved of white and brown agate in his right hand. The priest's robe is carved carefully as it eddies about his feet, the sleeves cascading from his broad shoulders in sweeping folds on each side. His features are well detailed and his gaze pensive. Charming miniature zushi shrine with black lacquer on the outside and gilt lacquer on the inside in which stands a tiny carved and painted wooden figure of the Shinto Guardian Fudo Myo, he stands and hold various tiny metal implements in his six hands, Edo Period. Size: 4 1/2" high x 2 1/2" wide (5 1/2" wide open) x 2" deep.
