Seated monkey figurally sculpted from a light-hued sandstone, the hands covering the ears in classic hear-no-evil fashion. Late-edo Period ca. 1800. Very minor old loss.

Hand shrine, or zushi, in the shape of a lotus pod, carved in two halves. On the inside, on one side the sitting figure of Amida Nyorai on a lotus base, his hands in mudra in his lap, against a gilded background. The other half of the lotus bud is inscribed in black ink on a gold lacquer background with the mantra Namu Amida Butsu. Comes with its original brocade pouch. And with a custom made wooden stand. Hand shrine, or zushi, in the shape of a lotus bud, carved in two halves. On the inside, on one side the standing figure of Amida Nyorai on a lotus base, his hands in mudra. Auction  

An extraordinarily expressive, esoteric, Edo period lacquered wood sculpture of Monju Bosatsu (Bodhisattva Manjusri). The figure seated in relaxed posture. The lower hand likely held a sutra scroll while the right hand likely held a sword. The sutra signified enlightenment (which attribution was particularly ascribed to this Bodhisattva) and the sword signified wisdom cutting off delusion. Standing Jizo Bosatsu sculpted in relief from a coarse-grained iron-rich granite, the right hand bearing aloft a hoju (sacred jewel). Late-Muromachi/Momoyama Period ca. 1550. Old loss to the perimeter, and overall softening of the lines and contours.

The messenger of the Dragon King of the Sea, holding up a tide ruling jewel. Very rare tagayasan (cassia wood) carved base in the shape of a three-clawed dragon, surrounded by waves that carry the tide ruling jewel, a virtually clear rock crystal ball. Tagayasan base carved and composed in yosegi saiku technique, which is commonly applied in Buddhist sculpture. The base covered in nashiji lacquer. Japan, Edo period, around 1800. Unsigned.... A really nice, old bronze Shishi sculpture. It works well enough as a free standing figure and we cannot be certain it wasn't intended as such. The bottom has a single 1/2 inch (1.27 cm) diameter opening and another opening being the beast's mouth. The party we acquired from described it as an incense burner. Perhaps it could have been the cover of a censer - the opening in the bottom allowing smoke to escape from the mouth. It is not clear if a few points on the bottom surface might suggest the...
