The broken blade of a stone age knife excavated in Japan is contained in this antique custom silk lined wooden box dated 1922. The three shards total 9-1/2 inches (14.5 cm) in length, from the base of the haft to near the tip. The box is titled Stone Age Japanese Knife, and contains a long inscription within. This is a rare ivory tanto formed as a vajra, its hilt pierced and
carved as a sphere from which lotus flowers emerge. On one
portion of the ivory saya, a continuous landscape with pine,
birds-in-flight
and a boatman, is meticulously carved in high and low relief. On the reverse,
the legendary monk Daruma stands wrapped in a multi-fold cloak,

This is an aikuchi -mounted tanto in a black lacquered saya with
smooth copper fittings. The gilt menuki formed as a plum blossom crest
rests on
a gold-lacquered, silk-covered hilt. The aikuchi tanto includes a pair
of split kogai of ribbed, shakudo design, its kozuka knife with copper handle

Here is an excellent aikuchi- mounted tanto (short blade) with beautifully worked cloisonne koshirae. On the scabbard and hilt, a dynamic dragon worked in fine wires, covers the ground of the deep blue-enameled scabbard.
