The small bore shows that this long rifle (tanegashima), was an arm made for display or the shooting of small game. Most likely owned by a Shogun of a major clan in Japan around early 17th century. An Edo period iron Go-Mai-Do Armor in black lacquer signed in a gold tablet Myochin Munechika under the right arm. It features a 24 plate Suji Kabuto in Sabiji-nuri wih black lacquered Shikoro threaded with blue and orange with white piping (matching that on the Nodokake, Sode and Kusazuri). A shibuichi, eight-lobed tsuba with beautifully executed gilt kiri mons strategically placed, front and back. (The kiri mon, or paulownia crest, one of the most honored Japanese crests, also relates to the legend of the mythical phoenix that perches only on the branches of the paulownia tree.) Fastened to the lower edge of a men gu (armor mask), iron layered plates laced with silk, coated with lacquer. Some chips in the lacquer but overall condition is excellent. Japanese; early Edo period, 17th century. 5 1/2" tall x 6" wide, mounted on contemporary metal stand.
