A heron quietly stands still by the reeds. Depicted on silk with ink. Heron has been a favorite bird of Japanese artists since ancient times. The Chinese character used for the name of this bird represents a dewdrop, which shimmers in the morning sun as the snow white plumage of the bird also reminded the glistening dewdrop. A spring and fall bird and flower (kachoe) diptych by the renowned Meiji period artist Watanabe Seitei. Each large scroll measures 84'' by 25'' (213 by 63 cm). Each image measures 49'' by 19.5'' (125 by 50 cm). Painted on silk with ink and color. The paintings are in very good condition. The original mountings are of high quality and finished with ivory rollers. Light creasing and concave buckling of the scrolls. Watanabe Seitei or Shotei (1851-1918).
