A wonderful hand-scroll of erotic paintings or 'shunga' from the first half of the 18th century. Old, rare and exquisitely painted with high quality ink and pigments. The twelve images form a complete set and are representative of the twelve months of the year. As with most shunga, particularly from the Edo period, the artist has chosen to remain anonymous. There were numerous attempts to suppress shunga by the Tokugawa shogunate though they likely had little lasting effect.
