Carp swim languidly through the pale silk of this massive painting by important 20th century artist Yamamoto Daiji (1908-1987) mounted as a hanging scroll and dating likely from the late 1940s to 1950s. Inscribed in the early winter of Tenmei 1 or 1781 by an unknown artist, the image being the work of Yamamoto Joshunsai. Unerringly fluid and sparing strokes and washes of ink define the 'shirasagi' or white heron in its shallow river haven. It is unaffectedly camoflaged with its globular profile echoing the forms of the blooming flowers and beak and legs those of the reed like foliage.
Painted with ink on paper the work is in very good condition in all respects. It has quite recently been remo... Click for details
