Container to carry tobacco in the shape of a yawning and stretching Daruma. The body is made of kiri (Paulownia) wood, while the arms and the face, which can be removed and functions as the cover, are made of a light brown, much denser wood. ‘In front of’ Daruma (inlaid in his belly) a sceptre and an alms bowl. A tiny mingei image of the god of fortune Hotei carved from what appears to my untrained eye to be bone, possibly Stag-horn. He squats, grinning up at the sky, his ubiquitous sack voluminous behind. Through the back and down through the bottom is bored a hole for the string. The figure is 1-1/2 inches (4 cm) tall and likely dates from the 19th century (Late Edo to Meiji). This rare Hirado netsuke is one of the very few pieces of Hirado with multiple colors - grey, Hirado blue and light brown. The boys’ face is unglazed and has the very carefully detailed eyes typical of the finest Hirado human figures. The netsuke portrays a charming young boy holding a large lotus leaf over his head as an umbrella. The netsuke measures 2” high by 1 1/8” wide by 1 5/8” deep. This superb inro suite has a six case inro decorated with two makie Shishis gamboling through the arch of a garden gate. The garden is filled with plum blossom trees. The entire design is done on a sold black – roiro – lacquer with a sprinkling of nashiji on all sides and on the top and bottom. The inner sections of the six cases where they join one another are also executed in the nashiji (pear skin) gold lacquer.

Sekiho was a ceramic artist of Onko-ware in Gifu Prefecture.

A reticulated round manju masterly carved from walrus tusk. Depicting the rakan Handaka Sonja holding the flaming pearl and a dragon among waves and clouds. Condition: fine. Dimension: diameter: 4.8 cm, 2.2 cm thick.
