Container to carry tobacco in the shape of a yawning and stretching Daruma. The body is made of kiri (Paulownia) wood, while the arms and the face, which can be removed and functions as the cover, are made of a light brown, much denser wood. In front of Daruma (inlaid in his belly) a sceptre and an alms bowl. The two holes in the top of his head are lined with wooden rings and his fists are holding the cord. A tiny mingei image of the god of fortune Hotei carved from what appears to my untrained eye to be bone, possibly Stag-horn. He squats, grinning up at the sky, his ubiquitous sack voluminous behind. Through the back and down through the bottom is bored a hole for the string. The figure is 1-1/2 inches (4 cm) tall and likely dates from the 19th century (Late Edo to Meiji). Beautiful antique miniature netsuke firearm with metal hardware. Metal fittings are movable. Incised decoration of scrolling vine on barrel. Etched wood design on butt of gun. 6 small metal flowers (chrysanthemum). Worn gilt and shibuichi metals on decorative elements. Hexagonal ring on end of barrel. Minor old restorations. Small ring on bottom. Measures 2.25" long. 19th century Meiji period (1868-1912).
