This is a wonderful carved ivory box done in a very high relief design. The four Snow Monkeys appear to be arguing over a piece of fruit and all have different expressions. The insides of the open mouths even show all the teeth, tongue, and epiglottis. There is a tiny chip on the underside bottom and a little warping/shrinkage on the edge of the lid. The box measures 8 1/4 inches long , 3 inches wide and 2 1/4 inches tall. We are not sure how old the piece is but are fairly certain it is at leas... Click for details

A lively, boxwood study of a recumbent ox with folded legs formed as a
netsuke with himotoshi on nether side. The ox sits with its head
resting on its front legs, nose rope-tied to bridle. The
mother-of-pearl eyes are deeply inset, enhancing the ox's charming
expression. This netsuke is unsigned, School of Tomotada, and is in
excellent condition with minor wear commensurate with age.
Late 19th Century, Japan
