This elegant Japanese cast bronze vase has a slender base rising to an elongated narrow neck which flares to a small trumpet mouth, its front side wonderfully decorated with a virtuoso high relief rendition of an iris plant in flower, the stream in which it grows being represented by a swirl of bronze. This exquisite Japanese gold inlaid miniature bronze chest features hinged doors which open to reveal two small drawers, all extensively worked in two shades of gold and decorated throughout with dragons, landscapes, peacocks and “ho-o” birds (phoenix). There is incredible detail in all aspects of this huge bronze sculpture of a jacketed monkey and his elder handler resting on a bronze base signed Shojun (also read Katsunori), dating from the mid 20th century (1935-1965). This elegant and distinctly Japanese bronze flower vessel was cast in futabana style with a classic low body, crisply cut shoulder and wide flaring trumpet-shaped mouth. Mid to late 19th century. An odd ichirin-sashi vase made from a large crushed gun casing (45 mm diameter) entirely engraved with calligraphy inlayed with hammered brass signed Kakudo and dated 1916 The top has been squared and crushed creating a very unique appearance, stress from the folds lightening the olive colored metal. The piece is 3-1/2 inches (9 cm) tall.

A richly patinated bronze vase signed on the base Shugetsu featuring on one side silver wire in the shape of 2 young pine sprigs hammered into the mottled red surface. Two ribbon-handles rise from the shoulder of the simple form as it swells to the outturned neck. The vase stands 8-1/2 inches (21.5 cm) tall.

A dynamic white bronze (hakudo) image of the Daruma, the highly revered founder of Zen Buddhism, standing firmly planted on the hard ground, unswayed by the tempest tearing at his robes. Superb craftsmanship and an unusual orange peal texture set this piece apart, facial features and detail being extremely realistic. It stands 11 inches (28 cm) tall, and dates from the first part of the 20th century.

A PAIR OF JAPANESE BUDDHA CANDLE LAMPS

I have never seen anything like these before in 30 years of dealing in Asian art. They appear to be a true pair of figures, each depicting the infant Buddha. From each head rises a column surmounted by a sconce to hold a candle; the sides open to make the removal of the used candle stub easier.
