These Japanese bronze "kugikakushi" (ornamental metal covering to hide nails) were relief cast in the form of stylized dragons coiled to form the shape of stylized clouds. Meiji/Taisho period, early 20th century. The dragons were cast in high relief against a punched ground with tiny circles. Both kugikakushi have backplates and the characteristic squared push-pin type shafts. Fancy kugikakushi such as these were usually decorated with various good luck and auspicious motifs. Fine Large Edo Period Japanese Tobacco Pipe (Kiseru) from the collection of a renowned author on and collector of Asian art. This imposing, oversized pipe of bamboo and bronze with its striking phoenix would have been smoked by a man of prestige, and the effect would have been quite intimidating. Acquired in Kyoto in 1985 by a renowned author on and collector of Asian art. 9 5/8 inches, 24.5 cm long. Very Good Condition.

A bronze vase of mountainous form by Nakajima Yasumi I patinated in his signature mottled red-brown and enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The vase is 9-1/2 inches (24 cm) tall, 8 inches (20.5 cm wide and in excellent condition. Nakajima Toyoji, (d. 1950) first came to notice in 1908, receiving an award at the Senkatsu Kinen Exhibition. A 19th century bronze usubata flower basin in the shape of a mystical frog sending forth its spirit in a cloud, a smaller frog resting on its back. The creature has a great expression. The underside of the basin is engraved with cloud designs and tinged red, the frog a dark olive, signed on the belly. With the basin the usubata is 9-1/2 inches (24 cm) tall, 11 inches (28 cm) long. The frog itself is 6-1/2 by 5 by 4 inches tall (16.5 x 13 x 10 cm) and in excellent condition. .
