A very fine mid- Meiji bronze pricket candle stick with relief decorations. It stands on a tripod base - on the "knees" of which are surmounted high relief tao tsie (demon) masks. There are two elephant handles on the upper portion for holding the candlestick whilst transporting it between rooms. The upper section has two deep relief reserves portraying a figure - Hotei(?) - reclining with his arm resting on what appears to be a tiger - you can see its tail wrapping around the figure's body and... SOLD  

This is a Japanese bronze double gourd Suiteki - a waterdropper used in dampening the sold inkstone used by scholars when doing calligraphy. The piece measures 2 1/2 by 1 1/2 inches x 3/4 inch tall and dates from the late Meiji period, circa 1890-1910. The gourd is shown with a cord wrapped around its middle and with a short ax leaning against the side. We have never seen a suiteki with an ax included in the design, so have no idea as to its significance. The bronze is excellent condition with ... Click for details

He has be accepted at the Japan Fine Arts Exhibition (Nitten) and received a number of awards.
He became professor of Tokyo University of the Arts in 1978.

A mottled bronze vase of globular form with an impactful moriage rendering of a lone lobster with inlaid shakudo eyes upon its surface. The sea creature is naturalistically detailed and spans the width of the exterior. On the interior of the vase, a removable otoshi serves as a vessel for flower arrangement. Museum piece. Beautiful bronze buddhist diety, Kannon, a bodhisattva dedicated to saving all sentient beings. Taisho Period C.1915 rom a buddhist temple in Gifu Prefecture, Japan. She is lifesize standing on a lotus pedestal holding a lotus blossom and budin her left hand. Expression is serene and full of compassion. The kourin or halo has buddhist clouds on it.
