A pair of bronze and multi-metal coupes sculpted in distinctive form with dark, textured surface. The two vessels are designed on a bed of vines and maple leaves from which forest creatures such as centipedes, wasps, frogs and snails crawl at leisure. These unusual and charming coupes exhibit wonderful craftsmanship and illustrate Japan’s sensibility toward nature in all its forms. Gilt inserts are marked with Japanese numerals 4 and 7 on bases. Excellent condition with no loss.

A bronze vase naturalistically modeled as a bamboo culm by the Meiji Period metalwork master, Kyoto-based artist Jomi Eisuke. Jomi was known for his seamlessly hand-beaten copper technique and for fine, meticulous relief work.
