This is a very nice looking Japanese lacquer kogo covered box that measures 4 1/8 long by 3 ½ wide by 2 Ό deep. It has a black lacquer ground (roiro) with a red lacquer rim on the top. That is covered all over by gold makie flowers and vines top and sides.

To imagine the amount of time that has gone into the making of this gorgeous lacquer incense container is difficult. It is made with no center, simply layer upon layer of lacquer dried, cut, shaped and polished to a brilliant sheen. The green shade is indicative of the Tsugaru region. The colors swirl and mingle, never mixing, the dozens of layers visible on the cut edge. Peacock feathers are etched into the black lacquer of this writing box signed Shoho and enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The work is so complex, and yet has such a natural, sublime feel. It is unused, containg the original suiteki water dropper and ink stone. The box is 19 x 25 x 4 cm (7-1/2 x 10 x 2 inches) and is in excellent condition.
This is a sweet little round kogo (covered box) with a fine makie gold design of a woman seated on some rocks with a group of large flowers to her left and overhead. There are areas of the design done in silver lacquer and the womans kimono has a number of small square pieces of different colored lacquer to enhance the beauty of the kimono. An overlapping bi-form tebako (cosmetic box) designed in hiramaki-e and togadashi. Autumnal imagery with mountains, streams, maple, pine and luxurious foliage adorns the exterior and sides, dense nashiji the interior and underside. Silver mounts and tomobako. Provenance: Signed on tomobako lid: "Gift by Empress at Hayama Goyotei (summer house), Taisho 6, March 3, 1918." This gold maki-e tebako is in good condition.

This is a handsome small lacquer kogo (covered box) with a landscape design executed in gold makie lacquer. The scene shows a pavilion on a shore shaded by large evergreen trees the pavilion placed near the opposite shore across a lake. On the near shore is another large tree that appears to be on a small island and surrounded by the stylized waves of the lake.
A beautiful compositional painting of Japanese lacquer art; this box displays a rich deep burgundy color with accents of gold & silver, the subject matter consist of a scroll of Mt. Fuji with a tree and building in the foreground, along with a painted hand held fan with the tassel flowing freely, painted golden birds amid silver waves, etc. This lovely treasure dates to the late Meiji period (1868-1912). A pair of gold-lacquer, covered incense boxes of mokko-form with inner containers and trays on footed, roiro and gold-lacquer stands. All are decorated with exquisite landscapes utilizing multiple lacquer techniques depicting huts and pavilions beside rolling waters, takamaki-e rockwork and pine, interiors and undersides executed in nashiji (densely sprinkled gold, simulating "pear-skin"). This is a globular shaped Japanese lacquer kogo covered box with a lovely decoration in mixed lacquer techniques. The bottom is flat so as to prevent it rolling.
