This lovely black and gold makie lacquer Japanese hair comb (“kushi”) and ornamental hair bar (“kogai”) set is decorated en suite and dates to the early 20th century (Meiji/Taisho period). Unsigned. The front sides of the comb and the ends of the two-pronged kogai are painstakingly decorated with a gold hiramakie (flat lacquer) and takamakie (raised lacquer) floral and circular designs with accents of red and green lacquer and iridescent “aogai” (abalone shell) inlay on a rich black roiro-nuri l... The size of Comb set: comb, 3 3/4" L x 1 7/8" W x 3/16", Kogai, 6 1/4" Long x 1/2" x 5/16" Wonderful Japanese Makie Comb set. Iy has design of Kiri, Sakura(cherry blossoms) and flowers. It fantastic Takamakie work in fine details, including raden(mothers pearl) inlaid on comb as well as on Kogai. It is made by Bekko. The both comb and kogai has signed by Kamei. The size of Comb: 4" L x 2" W x 3/15" Thick. Beautiful Japanese Lacquer Kushi(comb)with Raden finish. Raden is workmenship for Mothers pearl inlaid. This comb has wonderfully detail mothers pearl inlaid. The front has with glass inlaid at flower budd area. The flower is design of Kiku, chrysanthemum. The condition of comb very good except some age wear. A couple of tiny area of line missing. Dating from Taisho period. 1912-1924.
