This fine vintage Japanese wakasa-nuri stand with rolled legs has a mosaic-like surface that shimmers with gold foil and tiny inlaid pieces of iridescent mother-of-pearl. Early to mid-20th century. The base of the lacquer is wood which was finished with brown, black and red colors, and the layers of these colors are revealed by polishing the lacquer finish to create this unique and complex pattern. A variety of saya lacquer-style samples enclosed in a set of stacking boxes titled Nuri-Hon. Thirty samples covering inlays, various techniques such as nejiri, powdered shell, byakudan, wakasa, and tsugaru techniques. Japanese late 19th century set of black and gold lacquered trays. The set consists of 5 trays with the exact same design. Made by lacquer artist, MUNEMITSU. Each tray measures 10" by 10" and is 1 3/8" tall.
This is a luxurious five-case, gold-lacquered inro depicting a grove of foliage and flowers in gold and silver takamaki-e on a gold kinji ground.
The foliage is naturalistically rendered with kirikane details, the interiors executed in rich amber-colored nashiji. A coral ojime keeps the woven silk string in place. This inro is in very good condition with the raised signature of Kogyoku Sai on the base.
