This is a striking small Japanese lacquered piece that appears to have been a lid to some item - possibly for a natsume - a tea leaf holder. Though it is just a lid, we found the technique to be so fine that we believe it can stand on its own. The design is that of the famous character from the Noh drama - “Hannya”. The mask sits on a multi-colored cloth and a flowing stream winds nearby. The details are done in several different lacquer techniques – small black and gold chips – makie – hiramaki... A very rare and hard to find lacquered cigar case. This early 20th deep rust colored lacquered beauty comes of the Meji period of Japan (1868-1912) and is in excellent condition, a few minor nicks, hardly worth mentioning, but is listed for accuracy. This is a stunning lacquer hai dai, a stand used for holding a guinomi (sake cup). The hai dai is decorated all over with a pattern of leaves falling on a flowing stream. These are executed in both gold and silver makie lacquer. Most interestingly, some of the leaves are filled with nashiji (pear skin) sprinkled gold makie – as are the lines in the streams. A Fine and Rare Japanese Buddhist Gold Lacquer Kogo. 19th. century 4 3/8 x 3 1/4 x 1 1/2 ins. (11.1 x 8.3 x 3.8 cms) This very fine box, a kogo or incense container, is decorated with lotus and falling leaf motifs which have their origin in the Heian Period (9794-1185 AD.) This fine vintage Japanese wakasa-nuri stand with rolled legs has a mosaic-like surface that shimmers with gold foil and tiny inlaid pieces of iridescent mother-of-pearl. Early to mid-20th century. The base of the lacquer is wood which was finished with brown, black and red colors, and the layers of these colors are revealed by polishing the lacquer finish to create this unique and complex pattern.
