Japanese antique kanban (shop sign) for sake shop, made of solid piece of keyaki (elm) wood with beautiful grain, carved with large characters with design of peonies also carved in relief, lacquered and painted with details including a pair of phoenixes painted in black ink with very fine lines, large characters are lacquered black, other smaller characters are carved out and lacquered gold, Meiji Period (1868-1912). Size: 17 1/2" high x 32 3/8" wide x 1 1/8" deep.

This handsome Japanese tobacco box (“tabako-bon”) in square form, made from finely grained keyaki wood, is beautifully hand-crafted and finished with copper fittings. It dates to the early 20th century, Meiji/Taisho period. Keyaki (zelkova) is the most expensive of Japanese hardwoods. It has a beautiful dense grain and is sturdy and long-lasting, requiring little maintenance.

Lovely antique Japanese large rectangular tray with a scene of a woman gazing at the moon (inlaid mother of pearl), she is sitting near a small stream with flowers and grasses, misty clouds above, the tray is made of kiri wood and the decoration is made of beautiful cherry wood bark, outer sides are also covered in cherry bark, Taisho Period. Absolutely stunning and remarkably well cared for, is this visual plethora of scenes of a flowering prune tree and perched bird. The top portion of this Japanese treasure box exhibits a atmospheric scene of a placid lake with a boating scene. All hardware is silver plated and original. This wood and lacquer treasure box dates to the early Meiji period circa 1870's and is dated according to the type ornate locking mechanisms here shown. Size: 7.5" high and 8.5" wide.

Wooden panel, presumably keyaki, inlaid and mounted with pieces of wood and stagantler in the shape of a celestial dragon, surrounded by islands of clouds. The pieces are mounted partly with the help of nails. The inlay in the upper left corner is engraved with the name Ichiryu. No craftsman with that name is known to have been working in stagantler. Japan, Taisho or early Showa period. Framed in a faux-bamboo frame from the same period.... Click for details
