This handsome miniature chest of drawers is meticulously hand crafted with contrasting hardwood inlays in an overall diagonal checkerboard pattern. Meiji period (1868-1912). On both sides of the chest, cut out finger holes are carved in the shape of pine boughs to facilitate lifting and carrying the chest. Used in Japan during the hot summer months, these sliding reed doors allowed cooling breezes to circulate yet afforded privacy. This set, from late Meiji Period, has mellowed to a rich golden color. The frame and top portion of the doors are light-weight kiri wood. Bamboo trims the reeds and open area at the top of the screen. A gargantuan hand formed Buddhist prayer bell resting upon a brocade pillow set in an ornate red lacquered wooden stand with gold accents complete with leather wrapped striker dating from the first half of the 20th century. Along the rim of the bell is the word Te-Uchi (hand formed) and the signature Seiryu. It has a very pleasant ring. The bell is just under a foot (29 cm) in diameter, and arranged the set stands 21 inches (52.5 cm) tall.

All the exterior components of this elegant Japanese vanity (kyodai) with its long oval mirror were crafted from finely-grained burled keyaki (zelkova) wood. Ca. 1920. This handsome Japanese tobacco box, made from finely grained keyaki wood, is crafted in miniature naga-hibachi (long firebox) form. Late 19th century. An inner wood lip encloses the original copper liner, and the bamboo cylinder ash receptacle is also original. There is one tiny drawer which has been cut from the same piece of hardwood as the body, so the grain across the drawer front is perfectly matched with the box.
