Ichiban Japanese and Oriental Antiques

$895.00

In all our years of collecting, we have only come across a couple of these small table screens for the scholars desk - known as Tsuitate. (The last one was saw was done in Hirado and that was 7-8 years ago). This handsome and strong pottery table screen is done in the Kakiemon palette and depicts polychrome chrysanthemums on a plain tan crackle glazed ground. Lovely in its stark simplicity - undoubtedly made for the Japanese market - and dating from the early to mid 19th century - the Late Edo ... Click for details

B & C ANTIQUES

$345

This unusually shaped Bizen ware sake flask (“tokkuri”) has an irregular pinched body and a tall neck. Early 20th century, probably Meiji. You can see that it has been wheel thrown. This is a wonderfully tactile piece with a great “feel,” and it fits perfectly into the hand for pouring. A rich natural ash glaze covers the shoulder and some of the protruding angles, culminating in glaze splotches on some surface areas. For centuries, Bizen has been highly regarded for its dark red-brown stonewar... Click for details

Natural yellowish ash glaze spots are deposited on the shoulder and figures. The bottle is wheel thrown, and there is an impressed potters mark on the foot. The three modeled figures are the gods Hotai, Fukurokuju and Benten. Early 20th century. ... Click for details

$295.00

A handsome little tea jar decorated with a traditional Samurai wave pattern design in handpainted slip trailing decoration, under the glaze. Alternatively, the design could be a highly stylized interpretation of the traditional "floating wheel" design that dates back to the 12th century. That motif derives from the early practice of soaking the wheels for bullock carts in the Kamo River in Kyoto; wheels thus treated were stronger and held their shape longer. The design went out of fashion after... Click for details

$495.00

A very rare figural piece of a Kylin from the Bizen Kilns. This delightful figure has a charmingly goofy folksy expression with its dark brown/black applied eyes and its ruffled mane down its back. He stands a full 6 1/2" high and is 7 1/2" long x 4" wide. Unsigned piece - excellent condition - there are two very old chips to the toes - both the right and left foot - otherwise it is fine. Quite rare to find animal figurals in this pottery. I believe it dates from the late Meiji period.

$195.00

Beautiful small Japanese pottery suiteki (water dropper used to moisten the solid ink for doing calligraphy). Shaped as a miniature teapot, this lovely piece has a great dark chocolate brown glaze with splashes of blue/white glaze as highlights - woven twig handle. This beauty measures 2 1/2" tall to the top of the finial and is 2 3/4" diameter at the waist - old museum marks on the unglazed bottom and on the inside of the lid. The tip of the spout has been chipped - but it still pours just fine... Click for details

$495.00

A wonderful late Edo Period Seto ware Mingei dish in the classic "Horse's Eye" pattern - shown in all the books on Japanese pottery, ca. 1800. This beauty measures 10 1/4" in diameter and is 2 1/4" deep. As is usually the case, there is a nick on the rim - see photo - but that does not detract from the simple beauty of the design. Multiple spur marks on the inside of the bowl indicate the dish was glazed and then placed in the kiln upside down to fire it. Fine addition to a collection of early J... Click for details
