A fine modern Akahada ceramic okimono in the form of a two tiered Pagoda in the original box signed by Onishi Rakusai (1911-present). Each of the three pieces in this sculpture is made of very fine white clay covered in pale green glaze, which gathers shadow-like in the grooves and accentuates the corners. The underside is stamped Akahada Rakusai and the piece likely dates from within the last 30 years. Assembled it stands 10-1/2 inches (26.5 cm) to the peak. I have spoken with the kiln rega... I got goose-bumps when this Daruma 'found me,' what a figure. It has a classic Seto finely crackled glaze and then that very delightful face, we stared each other down for 'ages.' It was made by Seto veteran ceramic artist Masuda Shigeyuki(1927-) and he's been making figures for decades. He started his career in 1952 and has exhibited all over Japan as well as creating some works at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. last year. This Daruma is in perfect condition with a signed box and is quite ... Click for details

A very sweet small pottery Tokkuri (sake bottle) done in a white grained ribbed body covered with white slip and with a crackled brilliant glaze. Decorated on one side with mountains and on the other side with what appears to be a stylized line of pine trees - all done in cobalt blue underglaze. Old chip at the mouth. Possibly Seto ware. Has an old collectors label on one side. We date this one from the mid to late Meiji period, circa 1890-1905. Very interesting piece on handling. H8.1 cm

The body of this handsome early 20th century Japanese folk ceramic hibachi in rounded 10-sided form is glazed in rich dark brown with an unctuous blue and mauve flambe glaze on its rim and dripping down its sides. The upper half of the interior is washed in brown glaze. We have been unable to determine the folk kiln of its origin. It is often difficult to identify the specific place of manufacture of many 19th and early 20th century Japanese folk ceramics due to the spread of technology from one... Click for details
