This is an early 19th century, Edo period, Arita plate with a design of three bare branches in a reserve in the center of the plate. A circle of stylized leaves surrounds these branches. It is possible that this is meant to represent the Three Friends of Winter – plum, bamboo and pine – but the only stem that we can clearly identify is that of the bamboo. The outer border design is of two large blue on white leaves with two smaller white on blue flowers alternating with the larger leaves. The ba... Click for details

This is a lovely pair of thin walled chawan – tea cups – from the Arita kilns. Each of the two cups has a fine relief design on the inside walls. The designs appear to be fans and bows – hard to photograph with clarity. In the bottom of the cups is a dark cobalt blue design that we cannot make out – there do appear to be some elongated scales so it could be a curled dragon. Just below the upper rim the inside of the cups at the very top there is a band of blue geometric figures like linked vine... Click for details

This is a small bowl with every rim that has a wonderful presence. The base glaze is a light tan – almost white. Over that there is a large number of small silver splashes that look like snows flakes and are very reflective. The bowl has an evert top rim and is signed on the bottom. We have not been able to figure out what the signature is – not even sure it is Japanese; however, we have seen Japanese ceramics with this type of snowflake overglaze on other Japanese ceramics. ... This is a superb Hirado vase with relief and underglaze blue paintings of two pomegranates on their vines. Some of the fruit and leaves are low relief. There are also two raised characters that translate as "Kin Bana" or could read "Kinka". The other two other two raised characters read “Hyakusha”. Presumably at least one of the set of two is the artist’s name. The vase is round – with an indented neck that then flares out to a white rim. The base is also indented and then flares out to make a r... Click for details
