This lovely Japanese Hirado sometsuke (blue and white porcelain) dish is elegantly decorated in various shades of underglaze blue with a large white lotus blossom molded in low relief. Meiji period (1868-1912). The reverse bears a three-character underglaze blue mark which reads “Hirado Yaki” or Hirado ware. A Late 17th. Century Japanese Imari Porcelain Lidded Jar with 19th. century French Ormolu Mounts.
Ht. with mount 12 1/2 ins. (31.8 cms) Ht. of jar without mount 8 ins. (20. 3 cms) Unusually this jar has not been modified to fit the mount and is in undamaged condition with no repairs. The design is of shishi Buddhistic dogs and panels of flowers and leaves. The French bronze ormolu mounts can be detached by removing two small screws. Making less than twenty a year--if making them at all--in various sizes, Fukami Sueharu's kaikei (seascapes) seihakuji (bluish-white porcelain) series are quite extraordinary works of art.
