From our Japanese Collection, a truly superb satsuma vase, Meiji period (1868-1912), of robust globular form, depicting seven separate circular reserves of figures set against a most unusual and very appealing variegated ground that morphs from emerald green, to celadon, to cream, and finally to brown, all heavily overlaid with a rich brocade of chrysanthemum heads and other floral and geometric motifs executed in gilt. Decorated with a floral and butterfly motif, this bowl shows artistic restraint used more commonly for the Asian market. The form is a ceremonial tea bowl or chawan and is used in the Japanese tea ceremony. It measures 3.25" x 5.5" and dates about 1890. Condition is excellent.

This vase has a pleasing globular shape and is decorated with two nicely detailed panels. The reserves are a combination of floral, geometric and fish scale patterns in a rich color palette. It signed Hozan on the underside and dates about 1900. The dimensions are 8" x 6" and the condition is very good, less some minor gilt wear on the rim.

The shi shi dogs have serrated teeth that are realistic, the painting of court figures is done immaculately. This is a finely made, hand painted, artist signed Satsuma koro or incense burner with maker's mark "Shuzan" on the bottom. Beautiful decoration with fine details. It is in excellent condition with very little gilt wear and no damages. The dimensions are 3.5" diameter x 3.5" tall. It dates about 1910.

The size of Kogo: 2 7/8" Dia x 7/8" High. Wonderful Japanese Satsuma Kogo done by Gyokushu. It has very fine details works of 8 samurai on the top of Kogo with cherry blossoms scenery. Inside has the window story of ladies on the bottom kogo and cover back has lady and man. The workmenship are superb as well as the condition of gold and entire kogo work. No chip, no crack and no hairline. It is marked Satsuma mon as well as, Satsuma and Gyokushu signed. Dating from Late Edo, circa 1850's.
