One scene on this vase is in the form of a scroll and the other a butterfly. The reserve work is very fine, with thickly applied gold and enamel. It measures 4 7/8" x 2 7/8" and is in excellent condition. It dates about 1880 - 1890.

A beautiful Satsuma vase by Kinkozan, the foremost artist of the 'Golden Age' of Satsuma during the Meiji Period. In ovoid form with gorgeous relief butterfly and flower designs and a central band with floral rosettes on black. Kinkozan mark on base. Height: 12.5 inches, 31.5 cm.

This is a tightly executed example of Seikozan's fine work. Each band of enamel work wraps 360 degrees around the vase, showing vivid detail. The condition is excellent with no visible signs of wear and no restorations. It dates about 1880 - 1890. It measures 4.5" x 2".

These six panel vases are decorated with alternating scenes of mountainscapes and floral close-ups. The condition is very good with some very light wear to the gold on the rim. They measure 7.5" x 3.75" and date about 1910.

A large Japanese Satsuma koro (incense burner) decorated on one side with a profusion of big spider mums with attending large green leaves - a single dragonfly hovers overhead. On the other side are two more colorful dragonflies near a leaf of the plant. The cover to the cover has no overglaze decoration – just three heart shaped holes from which the incense smoke can emerge and a seated shi shi with gilt paint – some of which has worn off. This is a finely executed 2 panel vase on a rich cobalt ground. The scene showing the hut along side a gorge with a bamboo grove has great perception of depth. All of the gold application is in place and the vase is in near mint condition. It measures 10" x 4.5" and dates about 1900 - 1910. The Kinkozan signature is both signed and impressed.

This is an unusually shaped Japanese porcelain sake cup holder known as a Haidai. The top of the haidai is hexagonally shaped and has a low relief design of stylized waves in the classic Japanese style. The base has a slightly rounded bottom but the bottom is very flat so that the cup does not roll around. The glaze has a very faint hint of celadon. We are not sure of the pottery – the presence of pale orange where the glaze ends - seen in photo # 2 - inside the rim would be typical of Hirado ... Click for details

Impressive Iga yaki ware sake cup made by a prominent contemporary potter, Shiro Tsujimura (1947-). He has been very active potter and has been awarded several prizes. His works has been highly valued in and out of Japan. This piece is very good in condition with no chips or cracks and comes with an original signd wooden box. The lid of the box has slight repair. Highly recommend quality piece.
