This is a handsome vase dating from the mid 20th century, Showa period. It has a lovely design with the tapered top done in a geometric medium blue color. As the base straightens out to a vertical body, we find a rounded body with a blue stream connecting reserves of the Three Friends of Summer. The back of the vase is primarily a plain white glaze. This is a huge Sumida Gawa vase from a grand old estate of oriental items. The previous owner had owned it for decades. We have never seen this pattern before, especially with the basket design behind the figures. Probably a one of a kind. It weighs a massive 25 pounds. It stands 18 inches high and is about 14 inches wide. The condition is very good overall and all the paint appears to be original. A red Raku Chawan inscribed with the Ichigyosho Tea phrase Seifu hakki yoku ni shozu by Zen Priest Kutsu Deiryu enclosed in a wooden box. The bowl is 4-1/2 inches (11.5 cm) diameter and in fine condition. Kutsu Deiryu (1895-1954) was born into a military family, and was raised from an early age in the strict environment until being diagnosed with Tuberculosis. A Shino glazed bowl inscribed with the characters Jutoku by Zen Buddhist Priest Yamada Mumon enclosed in the original cedar box signed by the potter and made in 1974 for the 500th anniversary of the completion of Tokuju-Ji Temple. The bowl is roughly 5 inches (12 cm) diameter, 3-1/2 inches (8.5 cm) tall and in fine condition.
