Here is the largest of our current selection of Oribe zogan-inlaid works by veteran ceramic artist Usui Kazunari; please see the first listing for more bio info on him. This tall work--standing 46cm.--has an organic feel and a regal presence. As noted, his work lies more in the ceramic kogei craft realm, relying as much on technique as a keen design sense; nothing is left to chance in the kiln. Not seen outside Japan before, Usui is an Oribe master in his own right. In perfect condition with a s... Click for details

A remarkable Satsuma lozenge-shaped koro on original wood stand, its lid with gilt floral finial. An umbelievable banding of seashells linked together and designed with miniature landscapes, water scenes and flora in gilt and colors embrace the lid and surround the piece's four panels. Two panels with exquisite scenes from nature and two with genre scenes of Japanese daily life highlight the sensitivity of the fine artist Hozan, whose awareness of social issues distinguishes his work from that ... A mottled blue over iron vase by Avante Guard artist Kumakura Junkichi (1920-1985) enclosed in the original signed and stamped wooden box. Not losing to the artists reputation for eccentricity, a circular belted center rises from the triangular base, concave on one side, convex on the other with a small hole in the top of the later side large enough for a sprig of autumn vine or bell flower. The vase is 7-1/2 inches (19 cm) diameter, roughly 3 inches (7.5 cm) thick and dates from roughly 30 ye... Click for details

When one thinks of Kasama it's quite hard to find a representative style these days. In the past the town turned out utilitarian vessels like that of its not too distant neighbor Mashiko. These days though it's pretty much anything goes in both towns, with most ceramic art, especially in Kasama, being ornately decorated--think Wada Morihiro. One of Kasama's more balanced ceramic artists in terms of design is surely Uetake Satoshi. A piece of his is now traveling Japan in the Japan Traditional Ar... Click for details

He's already established himself in Japan with numerous exhibitions including Mitsukoshi, Tokyo, and he was part of a three generation (Shoji-Shinsaku-Tomoo) exhibition at the Asahi Museum,Kyoto. Koyama Kiyoko(b.1936) was born far from Shigaraki in Nagasaki prefecture; she came to Shigaraki when she was eighteen and then spent some time in Kyoto studying about Kenzan and sometsuke blue and white wares. At the age twenty-seven she decided to pursue Shigaraki and thus entered a very closed male world; her strong will pulled her through some very tough discriminating times and she has created some stunning Shigaraki works ever since. More about Koyama can be read in our archives. This is a ... Click for details

An intriguing lidded bowl patterned with soft blue red and white in the style of traditional hand made temari balls (multicolored silk thread balls) by modern ceramic artist Sato Kazuhiko (b. 1947). The piece is signed on the base and dated 1992, and comes enclosed in the original signed wooden box. Inside the dish is pebble textured stone gray, with a silver tablet fired into the top.
