A fine Edo period Imari mokuzuke - (a small dish used for small sweets at the tea ceremony) – with a lovely design. The center of the dish has a design of three men in a boat on a lake in a lake surrounded by hills – one of which has a small house on it. A raised ridge highlights this central area. The size of Cup: 3 1/4" Dia x 2 3/8" High. Very pretty Japanese Ko Imari Sometsuke Porcelain Soba Choko Cup. The cup is made by fine quality porcelain and glazing. It has very fine detail Unruyu(dragon and clouds) design painted. Inside rim area also with detail geometric design painted. The condition of cup excellent, no chip, no crack and no hairline. Dating from Bunka Bunsei Late Edo, 1800-1820.

A modern Japanese double gourd studio vase with a design of a gnarly pine tree and an extensive poem in Kanji characters. Our colleague, Edward Kawanabe of Sanai Fine Art and Antiques, has provide this rough translation of the poem –”Mountain, pine tree branch and color coming out from between the clouds”. An interesting Japanese pottery vase from the Kutani kilns. The vase has an elaborate scene of scholars or immortals covering the main body of the vase. One immortal is riding a crane – we do not know the symbolism of this one. Another shows the Kinko Sennin riding a fish. Yet another has an immortal on the back of a minogame. A handsome Arita domed bowl with a design based on an old Chinese motif called "cracked ice". The theme is meant to symbolize Spring with the design on plum blossoms (prunus) falling on an ice covered pond or lake that is beginning to thaw and crack. This is a lovely early blue and white dish in triangular form. In the center is a design of a tea house in a mountainous setting – at the bottom of which a rider and is footman can be seen. On the three inner rims are long chilong – immature dragons. The sides of the piece bear the Eight Trigrams described below.

A Japanese blue and white charger with an interesting design in underglaze cobalt blue. The design has a central motif of stylized waves – then there are three cranes in a setting of brush or pine branches or possible marsh grasses – and three cross hatched items that could be baskets. A charming Japanese bulbous studio vase dating from the Taisho to early Showa period, circa 1929-1940. The design is that of lotus flowers done in a hazy impressionistic style. There are a number of Kanji characters on one side which appear to be a poem. A colleague of mine has provided a loose translation as “"Dew drop will become Jewel”.
