This Japanese ceramic hibachi from the late Meiji Period (1868-1912) has a country scene—a rustic dwelling snuggled amid old trees, hills and distant mountains. Ceramic hibachi were introduced in Meiji times as portable alternatives to the larger copper-lined wood hibachi and the heavier bronze receptacles. Whether ceramic or metal, hibachi held glowing charcoal embers used as a source of heat during cold Japanese winters. The ceramic ones generally were placed under low tables (kotatsu) that h... This is a superb round kogo by the Meiji ceramics master, Makuzu Kozan. It has a design of the classic Zen story of a gibbon monkey peering down at a reflection of the moon in a pond’s surface and hoping to reach down and catch the moon’s reflection – see footnote **. The design is executed in underglaze cobalt blue under a light tan crackle glaze similar to Satsuma. The interior of the kogo has a design in underglaze blue of what appears to be either rolling waves or rolling hills with low vege... Click for details

This is a very attractive small vase from Fukagawa. From the signature it was probably made in the 1920’s. There are some very fine details on this 5 by 5 inch vase. The vase looks fine but there is a short line on the rim seen in the 4th image and a strange pit or bubble that can be seen in the last image.

The vase colorful and is very finely painted. The vase stands 5 inches tall. Condition is excellent. There is a 1 inch factory craze line in the outer glaze. This is a nice little white porcelain koro - incense burner - from the Arita area. The koro has three shi shi on it - two for handles and one on the lid for a finial. The tripod feet look like softly molded animal heads.

One of the interesting aspects of the piece is the opening in the shape of a circle with a cross in the middle. That i... Click for details

This is a mid Edo period pottery figure – okimono – of the Japanese Household God, Ebisu. The piece is in decent condition for its age – numerous nicks and loss of paint – but still an interesting rendition of this character. The Ebisu measures 2 ˝” high by 2” wide by 1 1/8” deep. We date it to the 18th century of the Edo period.
