This remarkable bamboo crane has the entire length of the cane carved with a large variety of figures. The top is a whorl that shows fine patina – this, and the rest of the cane’s patina – have led us to date the cane to the late Meiji period, circa 1880s-1910. The carvings include – Monkeys in a tree – A Geisha Girl – Deer – Flying Cranes – an Eagle – and a pomegranate. Each of these designs is carved in very fine detail. ... Click for details

A highly attractive nyoi sceptre in the form of a lingzhi fungus (rekishi) made from a natural piece of gnarled wood. The piece has been polished and lacquered, but is otherwise un-modified. Japan, Edo, 18–19th cent. L 21.5 cm. Condition: Excellent with a fine patina from natural wear.

This is a very old portable brush and ink holder known as a yatate. When we first acquired the piece we thought it was just a simple folk art hand carved ink well and brush that was fan shaped and with hand wrought bronze pivot point. The piece is 10 “long by 1” deep and is ½” wide at its widest. It is made from a lovely dark old wood – we believe that it is was constructed from hinoki (Japanese Cedar wood).

A single-case wood inro in rich brown and gold lacquers with attached ivory manju netsuke of a sea dragon. (In allegorical style, the inro depicts the extraordinary story of ill-fated Anchin, the Buddhist monk, who suffers under Kiyohime’s obsessive passion. The monk’s unwillingness to succumb to her advances turned kiyohime into a vengeful dragon trapping Anchin under the temple bell. Kiyohime bursts in flames, melting away, the monk still inside the bell. Other versions of the legend mention... Click for details
