A unique Japanese scholar item of the Meiji period consisting of three well-carved seals incorporated in a miniature mountain-shaped suiseki or scholar’s rock. The mottled, dark-green, jasper-colored stone has been cut horizontally to provide surfaces for three well-carved seals in archaic style seal script. A set of scholars desk items, including a Chinese Qing dynasty crystal brush rest in the form of two mountains, Chinese crystal stamp carved with four characters between dragons, and an unusual obelisk written with the Nichiren Buddhist epitaph Na-mu Myoho-ren-ge-kyo in radical script over textured surface, glass or crystal. DESCRIPTION: An appealing little Japanese okimono of two bumpy toads, the carver having used the natural branching of the stag antler to differentiate them. One toad kneels upright, while the other sticks out his tongue. Very pleasing and nicely carved. Good condition with no losses or cracks; most likely Taisho Period, 1912 – 1926. DIMENSIONS: 3” high x 3” wide (7.5 cm).

Glass ball on a wooden stand of finely carved and undercut work. The base has been carved in the shape of high foaming waves in which fishes are swimming, and that carry the jewel of the tides. The waves inlaid with little pieces of mother-of-pearl and gold lacquer. Ryujin, the Dragon King, held this jewel to rule the tides. Overall height 7 ¼ inches. Japan, Meiji period. Ball in near-perfect condition (one tiny, shallow scratch), the stand with some repairs and some missing tips on the waves.
