Here is something unusual, an ox horn erotic toy with accompanying finger dildo, also of horn, dating from the 19th century enclosed in a kiri-wood box. The large piece is very thin walled, making it translucent. The smaller piece is heavier and seems to be made for a bit more abuse. There are two holes in the base of the larger piece for tying it on. The larger item is 6 inches (15 cm) long and the smaller 2-1/2 inches (6 cm) long. Both are hollow. The small piece is in excellent condition... Click for details

This diminutive hand-carved Edo period Japanese sculpture of Jizo, a bosatsu (Buddhist saint), dates to the mid-19th century. This is a fine example of the distinctive style of stone Jizo which originated from Sadogashima, an island in the Japan Sea off the coast of Niigata Prefecture long famous for its production of small-scale stone sculptures of Jizo. Carved from the unique Sado Island granite in the image of a Buddhist monk with a shaven head, this Jizo stands with hands clasped and holding... Click for details

A very unusual bust of Daruma carved in a sold black stone – we are not sure whether it is basalt, coal or jet. Suffice it to say that the exterior of the stone has a rough surface but the base and the face of Daruma have been polished to a very smooth high gloss. The piece measures 4” high by 2 ½” wide by 2” deep and is in excellent condition. There is a small linear flaw in the stone that runs from the eyebrow through the right eye. We date the piece to the early Meiji period – circa 1870-18... Click for details

A gilded wooden Votive Tablet (Ihai) enclosed in an elaborate presentation marking the 10th year since the passing of the Meiji Emperor, the back dated Taisho 10 (1921). Composed of 11 elaborately worked wooden pieces covered genuine applied gold foil (not Dorokin gold paint). Sixteen petal chrysanthemums (symbols of Japans Imperial lineage) climb up the scrolling sides with a circular mirror imagined into the top piece. Mirrors are quite often used in Shinto religious displays. The piece is... Click for details

A set of scholars desk items, including a Chinese Qing dynasty crystal brush rest in the form of two mountains, Chinese crystal stamp carved with four characters between dragons, and an unusual obelisk written with the Nichiren Buddhist epitaph Na-mu Myoho-ren-ge-kyo in radical script over textured surface, glass or crystal. We have been unable to find a single inclusion in the obelisk, making it either a perfect crystal, suiting a religious object, or glass. The stamp is four immaculately cut... Click for details
