A manju netsuke consisting of two ivory discs, of easily different size. Inlaid with mother-of-pearl, metal and another organic material. One signed on a mother-of-pearl tablet "Shibayama saku", the other one with sparrow design "Shibayama Yasunobu", an artist active 1850-1880 in Edo. Condition: the two discs with traces of former cohering, the rim of the larger disc with few really tiny chips. Dimension: diameter: 4.9 cm and 5.1 cm, 2 cm thick. A small lidded box fitted with two seals made of ivory, and a horn bowl for the seal paste. The hinges and buttons on the seals made of metal. The lid with carved design of an eagle. Condition: lid carving with loss, otherwise fine. Dimension: box 4.6 cm x 3.7 cm x 1.6 cm, seals: 3.4 cm and 2 cm long. Cites documentation can be obtained if required.

DESCRIPTION: A fine, small Japanese ivory okimono of a crouching shi shi (Buddhist lion) balanced on a leafy ball with teeth bared. Inside the leafy outer structure of the ball is a separate loose ball that rolls freely inside. This Ivory Okimono is carved in the finest detail by the artist MASANAO. Masanao lll was a third generation carver taught by his father and grandfather who were noted netsuke carvers. A Netsuke carved by his father sold for $48,800 at a major US auction house. This is a 19th century piece. The figure stands 6.0" in height, is 2.75" in width and 2.38" in depth.There are some age lines on the piece but no open cracks.

Okimono of hippopotamus tooth in the shape of a skeleton that is climbing on top of a second skeleton, while holding a snake, that scare a toad that was sitting on the skeletons head, while two more toads are getting frantic on the ground. This very unusual group may parody the sansukumi (the three animals that frighten each other: snake, toad and snail). The bearded Shoki stands clutching his spear in full armor with elaborate flowing robes and sword suspended from his belt. At his feet are two oni, kneeling in submission.
