This unusually large, heavily potted Japanese Oribe stoneware bowl in the form of a large lotus leaf is boldly decorated with a flowering tree peony branch on a on a richly-crackled cream-colored ground. Meiji period (1868-1912); unsigned. The deep bowl has been hand potted to resemble a fully-open lotus leaf, with incised leaf veins emanating from the center and the leaf edges curling naturalistically around the rim. Silkworm basket (kaiko-zaru), bamboo, used for growing silkworms for silk production in old Japan. Originally lined with mulberry leaves, it has taken on a new life and usage as a decorative object . Lined with old Japanese rice paper from books, it has become a wonderful folk art wall accent. Very good condition. Japanese, early 20th century. 34" in diameter.

A beautiful pair of shell containers (Kaibitsu)with messing fittings, used for the Kaiawase game. The matching of painted shells symbolizes faithfulness in marriage. A shell game set belonged often to the trousseau of a bride. The hampers are in excellent condition and they come with the original wooden boxes. Japan, Edo period. The height of the shell boxes is 43 cm. The diameter is 38,5 cm.
