Original Japanese woodblock print by Ohara Shoson (1877-1945), titled Mandarin Ducks in Snow. This print is undated, although the design was originally published by The Watanabe Color Print Co. in 1935. There is a pre-war Watanabe seal in the lower left margin. The design is illustrated at plate S7.5 of the artist’s catalogue raisonne, Crows, Cranes & Camellias: The Natural World of Ohara Koson, 2001.

The hexagonal baluster vase finely decorated with alternate panels depicting a landscape, a Bijin and a Samurai or Warrior. Separating them are sides decorated with rich gilding on a cobalt blue ground. The base has an extensive mark below a Shimizu mon. I find this style of Satsuma very difficult to photograph, please forgive the poor pictures.
