This gold repousse (22ct) representation of Krishna subdueing Katiya, dancing on Katiya (Katiya mardanam) was the center piece of a necklace that belonged to a priest. Katiya was a seven-headed poisonous snake (naga). Great craftsmanship. India, Tamil Nadu, second half of the 19th. century. The backside is silver (sse the pictures). In excellent condition. Size 5 / 4.3 cm. Weight 28.2 grams. Second half of the 19th. century

This frieze fragment was once part of a much larger frieze – probably supporting different times in the life of Buddha. ( A very long superb frieze of the entire life of Buddha can be seen in the Freer Museum, Smithsonian Museum in D.C.) This large fragment measures11 ¼” long by 9 ½” high by 2 ½” thick and is made of the stone known as schist. Lap desk with carved wood panels depicting lions, dogs, elephants and birds among tendrils. Framed by Sadeli micro mosaic, bone and ebony banding. Fitted interior with several compartments made of sandalwood and lined with red velvet or green fabric. Functioning lock with key. Condition: all knobs replaced, missing banding and Sadeli mosaic. Carved panels chipped. Dimension: closed: 32.2 cm wide x 24.2 cm deep, 8.5 cm high, weight: over 2 kg.

Made in Ganga-Jumna (two color bronze) technique in the 17th century. This complicated technique is nowadays lost. Please note the very fine detail on this figure, like bracelets, anklets and rings.
