This expressive Mongolian Thangka painting depicts the witch Sarvabuddha Dakini, who is presumably the best known of all transcendental witches. Here however, she is portrayed as Yogini, fierce and nude, treading on human bodies while she is holding a chipper knife, a Kapala skull bowl and a magic scepter.

Devi Lhamo is the only female Dharmapala in the Tantric Buddhist pantheon. She is also regarded as the “protector” of the Dali Lama. This large Thangka is a very unusual depiction of Devi Lhamo not only in the artistic interpretation of her mount but also the proportionately large area she occupies on the canvas.
