This fine Mongolian Thangka painting is a very unusual portrayal of a Bodhissatva. He is sitting on a mule, which is also quite uncommon, holding on to a silver-colored disc likely to represent the moon.
Around the Bodhissatva we see various other deities on horseback, reminiscent of Lokapala, as well as several other animals and even a lion dog. Throning on top is the rain god, the blue Vajrapani, also set against a flaming aureole.
The richly colored depiction is framed by a silk borde... Click for details
