This early 19th century Tibetan cabinet is painted with flowers and foliage that revealed original deep colors as we painstakingly removed layers of soot from the surface. A combination of the high Himalayan climate and soot from yak butter lamps has the fortunate result of protecting colors on painted Tibetan furniture. The inside of this piece still retains the wonderful exotic odor of burning lamps...

A BIRD FORM OIL LAMP, INDIA, 18TH CENTURY.

The bird, possibly a parakeet, forms the oil reservoir of a small suspended oil lamp. Similar birds are illustrated in Mark Zebrowski’s “Gold, Silver and Bronze from Mughal India”, some dating as early as the 16th century. This seems to be a very old example also and so a possible dating to 17th to 18th century seems cautious but fair.

4.1/4 inches long. The ring that the bird stands on is broken and deformed in one place but with no...

From the late 19th century, the necklace is made of 92.5 percent silver and weighs 240 grams.
