This standing Buddha from Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) is in classic Ceylonese style with the folds of the form-fitting robe represented by evenly spaced horizontal lines. It is exceptionally finely carved of jack wood rubbed to a lustrous finish. The Buddha's right hand is raised in the abhaya mudra offering protection, and the left hand holds a book, symbol of insight. The intricate carving on the halo represents eight paths toward enlightenment, and the Buddha stands on a double lotus throne...

During Buddhist festivals in Tibet, the horses were adorned (and when possible still are) with colorful trappings such as this "hat," which was placed just under the horse forelock to extend down between the eyes. The piece is constructed of thick wool pile backed and bound on the sides with heavy fabric. Leather strips sewn to the backing were used to tie the hat to the harness. Because the pieces were made especially for religious festivals, each one is a small treasure of Buddhist symbolism...

A gorgeous Indian dancer strikes a pose of pure attitude in this classic 19th century Indian miniature of the Rajasthan School. Of the various Indian schools of painting, Rajput and Rajput-Mughal styles have, in our view, the most enduring appeal. This Rajput work demonstrates the look of languorous elegance characteristic not only of that school of painting but of the architecture of palaces and temples that still exist throughout the state of Rajasthan...

Used in Tibetan monasteries to serve tea and perform rituals, low tables such as this one have long, pull-out drawers or boxes to hold Buddhist texts and scrolls. The front and both ends of this 19th century box-table are covered with painted foliage and flowers outlined with gesso. Wood aprons with a Tibetan design that incorporates the swastika, Buddhist symbol of law, extend the table almost to the floor on the front and sides...

Painted panels framed in intricate gesso work cover all four sides of this mid-19th century Tibetan box-table. Used in Tibetan monasteries to serve tea and perform rituals, low tables such as this one have long, pull-out drawers to hold Buddhist texts or scrolls. Both ends of this table are painted with the Buddhist "jewel of the doctrine," a cluster of wish-fulfilling gems known as "cintamani" on a tray...

A GOOD SILVER CHEROOT CASE, INDIA, 19TH CENTURY.

High grade silver with very nice handwork. The lid has a crosshatched strip for striking vestas on the top.

3.7/16” x 2.3/8” x 5/8”. Fine condition. In the last photograph you can see light coming through the cover, this is where the maker has been too enthusiastic and the material has cracked, you cannot see this from the outside. Weighs about 190 grams.

Hand hammered designs around the tops of copper water urns in Kathmandu, Nepal, designated particular sections of the city. This 19th century urn would have been carried to the communal well, most likely by one of the women of a household who filled the urn with water and carried it home on her head. Still today in much of Nepal many households are without running water and community wells are visited at least once every day...

A BUDDHIST STUPA, LATE 19TH CENTURY.

From the Indian sub-continent. Now polished, it has traces of red paint here and there. I assume it is from the latter years of the 19th century when most of these items came to England from India and Ceylon.

Approximately 8.1/2” high. Seems in good condition though the rim of the dome is slightly deformed. The foot-rim is also deformed...

A VERY FINE INDIAN SILVER VISITING CARD CASE, 19TH CENTURY.

Just imagine yourself as a young East India Company officer arriving in 19th century India. When you finally arrived at your posting’s British Cantonment you didn’t actually speak to any of the other British residents until you had been introduced. This involved calling at the houses of your betters and leaving your visiting card in the hope of receiving later an invitation to tiffin, or better...

Leopard claws, worn as a charm to ward off evil, are set in a large silver pendant on this late 19th century necklace from Sri Lanka. Such necklaces were considered masculine jewelry and, along with earrings, armlets and anklets for males, regarded as status symbols and portable emblems of power as well. Two large claws and one claw tip are set into the bottom of the pendant. The upper two-thirds of the pendant is covered with rows of filigree work...

A SINO TIBETAN BRONZE FIGURE OF YAMA DHARMARAJA, 18TH ~ 19TH CENTURY.

This frightening image is of the protector with a bull’s head and a third eye. Though not now in the best of condition it displays high quality work on the detailing and suggests Chinese work to me. The base plate is held in place with solder, done a long time ago, and may be the original. Yama is attached to the plinth with two tines and readily comes off.

5.1/2 inches high...

Antique turquoise and silver ornaments worn in the hair by Tibetan women, and sometimes men as well, seem to hold a special power to evoke the mountains and mystery of Tibet. This 19th century piece is shaped like a conch shell, Buddhist symbol of the absence of evil. We had a silver loop added to one end so it can be worn as a pendant. A large, earthy turquoise stone is set in the center of the piece, and small turquoise disks are lined across the top and bottom. The back side is covered with t...

A BRITISH RAJ TOPOGRAPHICAL PAINTING, BOMBAY, INDIA, 1846.

A small watercolour painting on paper, mounted on a larger sheet, of English sailors visiting the Tomb on Butcher’s Island in Bombay Harbour. The painting is titled on the mounting sheet “Mahommedan Tomb and Banian Tree - (Butcher’s Id. Bombay Harb.) – 1846. Unsigned. Topographical paintings of India from this period are increasingly difficult to find these days.

Image size is 7.11/16 inches by 5.1/2 inches. Fine c...

AN OLD SILVER & ROCK CRYSTAL ARM BRACELET, INDIA, 18TH / 19TH CENTURY.

The bracelet consists of eleven pieces of facetted rock crystal set into silver mounts, the settings enclosed at the back in order to reflect the light. The stringing ends with gold wrapped thread and a slider to adjust the diameter.

I was told by the former owner that this is an 18th century piece but I am no expert, it is certainly old and so I think an 18th / 19th century attribution is fair.

The cir...

Expertly fashioned silverwork and nine disks of gorgeous green aventurine make this 19th century necklace from Sri Lanka (Ceylon) a stunning piece. Each disk is enclosed in a worked silver bezel and hangs from a small silver hinge attached to a 12-sided silver bead. Strung on a fine braided rope, the beads are separated with small silver circles. On each side, the green disks and beads are bracketed with a slender, curved slider. The necklace was made in the old Ceylonese hill town of Kandy, and...

A FINE SILVER EWER, INDIA OR INDO PERSIAN, 19TH CENTURY

This superbly crafted silver jug was possibly used for serving tea or coffee. It seems to be similar to the work produced in northern India. Although unmarked it appears to be made from good quality silver and will polish well, I have left it unpolished so as to show the detailed work better.

Approximately 7.5/8 inches ( 19.4 cm ) high. 680 grams. There are two small repairs on one of the bulbous petal shapes in the lower part ...

$980.00
A beautifully crafted piece of jewelry from Rajasthan in North India, this sterling silver necklace has finely embossed images of 44 peacocks and is itself shaped to resemble a fanned peacock tail. From the late 19th century, the necklace is made of 92.5 percent silver and weighs 240 grams. Judging by its weight, regal design and motif of the peacock, national bird of India, this was a ceremonial piece and most likely was worn by a man. Eight vertical plates with peacocks and flowers in graduat...
