A VERY RARE CHINESE PITH PAINTING, EARLY 19TH CENTURY.
The painting shows two European merchants inspecting and purchasing tea, many Chinese figures engaged in packing and loading. Depictions of European figures in Chinese painting are seldom found and though this painting is not in mint condition it will present well in a frame.
Painted on pith paper and, unusually for this medium, fine condition. For a similar painting see “Chinese Export Watercolours” by Craig Clunas, V&A Museum, 1984. Lightly mounted on card.
