Chinese characters cut from thin natural mother of pearl shell set flush into a black lacquered frame. The edges similarly inlaid with simple flowers and leaves. The backs are recessed to take a backing board, not present, with brass tags to secure. Altogether a striking display.

A Chinese black lacquer round box and cover decorated with two colours of gold in Export style with a scholar and his servant seated in a formal garden. The interior decorated in red lacquer. Circa 1840.
3.7/8 inches (9.8cm) diameter. Top slightly worn and slight fritting to the lacquer on the rims.

The box is in terrible condition but is decorated with a very rare subject, European figures enjoying the garden of a large country house. Circa early 19th century.
