Image of Vairocana, the Cosmic Buddha, (Pilushana Fo or Dari Fo in Chinese), in brown patinated, cast iron. The Buddha’s hands are held in the gesture of abhiseka or initiation. With dedication: “The Monk Aijue.” Dated images of this type are known from the Jiajing period (1522-1566) of the Ming dynasty. Ming, 16th cent. H 35 cm. Corrosion, a few holes from imperfect casting ( typical of this kind of images ) and wear due to age.

A large Chinese cast iron figure of a seated Luohan, 16th ~ 17th century. The patina of the figure is untouched in as much as it has remains of old paint and the surface of the iron is flaking. The flaking is normal for cast iron and any loose surface can be simply removed and the iron oiled for that museum or gallery finish. A nice project for a serious collector. The figure has a long inscription cast into the Luohan’s back, the calligraphy is quite thin and at present would be virtually impos...
