Circa 15th Century. A tiny bodhisattva standing on a lotus pedestal, one hand carrying a lotus blossom and the other in the gesture of charity. Small Buddhist figures were used in tiny portable shrines and altars throughout China since the introduction of Buddhism there. (The Japanese counterpart of the portable shrine is the “zushi.”) This bronze example is of a uniform blackened bronze, the surface and detail worn from use. Details: A finely painted and detailed example of an 18th century Qing Sino-Tibetan gilt bronze image of the historical Buddha.
