A small but attractive image of a small, flute-playing boy riding on the back of a water buffalo made of bronze with a dark, brown lacquered patina. The depicted theme has been taken from the series of Ox-herding Pictures, a popular didactic account of the adept’s progress towards enlightenment according to Chan (Zen) Buddhism. Qing, first half of 19th century. H 13.5 cm, L 13 cm. Condition: Very good with slight rubbing due to handling. The flute, which was cast separately is missing.

A rare and finely cast bronze Crane, "He", made in 16th/17th Century Ming dynasty China probably during the reign of either the Jiajing (1522-1566) or Wanli emperor (1573-1619). There are traces of red and black lacquer and it carries what is probably a makers mark which reads "Ri Xin" (please view enlargement 8).
