Chinese Song to Yuan qingbai (yingqing) shallow foliate form scholar’s porcelain brush washer with ribbed cavetto in a creamy pale green glaze with tiny speckled imperfections. Chinese scholar's wood brush pot, or "bitong," carved in the form of a knotty tree trunk. The dense, hard wood is polished to a smooth, high sheen. The recessed base is not carved from a separate piece. Stands 4 3/8" high. Estimated to date from the late Qing dynasty (19th century). Photographs were taken with a flash to accentuate the wood grain and to better reveal the fine hairline cracks evident in several areas. Unusual teardrop-shaped traveling scholar's brass calligraphy box engraved with a landscape scene featuring a lone fisherman on a lake with two huts and a hill in the background. This is somewhat comical Chinese ceramic brush rest made in the shape of three squirrels perched on some branches or vines and staring out at the world. The glaze is a very thick white glaze that ends just short of the base of the rest and the base is unglazed. A Chinese blue pottery brush rest made in the form of the character for the word mountain. These brush rests were used on the scholars desk to place his brushes whilst working on calligraphy or paintings. The form is also similar to the French Fleur de Lis figure. There are three peaks to the mountain and there are two identical Chinese characters on the two sides of the piece – we have not been able to translate them.

A fine carnelian brush washer in the shape of a lotus leaf with three buds.The detailed carving of the stone shows each bud and vein clearly and the bottom shows - and sits on - the stem of the leaf. It measure 5" by 3 1/2" by 1/2" deep and is in excellent condition. It has been carved quite thin so that the natural beauty shines through the translucent body of the brush washer.
