DESCRIPTION: A captivating pair of lacquered figural candle pricks, each in the form of a smiling attendant with hand on hip, wearing a banded hat and holding aloft a candle dish. The figures themselves are hand crafted of solid, dark brown lacquer around a wire frame, while the flared bases are wood blocks covered in brown lacquer. A Ming Dynasty Tixi lacquer stem cup - a very rare form in this type lacquer. The cup stands 2 5/8" high and is 3 3/8" diameter at the top - the foot is 1 3/4" diameter. The entire exterior of the cup, the stem and the foot are deeply carved through multiple layers of red and black lacquer with scrolling lappet-shaped motifs and ruin-shaped motifs on the stem and foot. A fine Chinese carved lacquer cinnabar marriage box with the symbols for double happiness on the top. Each corner of the top lid has a different floral design within a ruyi shape. The center of the lid has a very complex flower design of four single peonie flowers surrounding a two flower spray on a stem of leaves. These very rare incised lacquer cup rests are made of Tixi lacquer wherein the surface is deeply carved through multiple layers of red and black lacquer. (The Japanese refer to this technique as nuri guri).Each dish has a design of eight ruyi scrolls surrounding the raised middle that would have held the small cup.
