A fine Chinese carved lacquer cinnabar marriage box with the symbols for double happiness on the top. Each corner of the top lid has a different floral design within a ruyi shape. The center of the lid has a very complex flower design of four single peonie flowers surrounding a two flower spray on a stem of leaves. These very rare incised lacquer cup rests are made of Tixi lacquer wherein the surface is deeply carved through multiple layers of red and black lacquer. (The Japanese refer to this technique as nuri guri).Each dish has a design of eight ruyi scrolls surrounding the raised middle that would have held the small cup. This intriguing Chinese lacquered wood incense "alarm" clock is crafted in “dragon boat” form with rich gold pavilion and landscape designs on a black ground. 18th/19th century. The prow and stern are snail-shaped instead of the more traditional dragon figurehead and tail (from which the name “dragon boat clock” was derived).
