This is a most unusual but quite handsome lacquer tray - we think it is probably Chinese in origin but cannot prove that. The design is a low relief design of a horse pulling a cart with what appears to be two passengers in it. The cart has a large fringed umbrella as a shade for the passengers. The shape of the horse and the two wheeled cart are what lead us to the conclusion that the tray is from China and probably dates to the mid 1920s to 1930s. The workmanship is excellent. DESCRIPTION: A beautifully carved Chinese export cinnabar jewelry box with cloisonné latch, dating from the late Qing to early Republic Period (c. 1900 – 1930). The top is skillfully carved with a bird and peony motif on a background of alternating squares, and all four sides are carved in a classic lotus with scrolling tendrils design. DESCRIPTION: A captivating pair of lacquered figural candle pricks, each in the form of a smiling attendant with hand on hip, wearing a banded hat and holding aloft a candle dish. The figures themselves are hand crafted of solid, dark brown lacquer around a wire frame, while the flared bases are wood blocks covered in brown lacquer. Max. width of largest box 3 1/4 ins. (8.3 cms) Each of the three boxes has traces of a raised floral or leaf design on the lids which has largely worn away with use. Silver lined Chinese lac burgaute cup in the shape of a sacred peach and decorated with a design of inlaid bats and clouds. Note how the artist used the stem of the peach as the handle for the cup and two leaves as a base for the cup to stand firmly.
