Chinese two-drawer elmwood coffer from Shanxi Province with a dark lacquered original finish and brass drawer pulls. Dates circa 1900. Measures 33"H x 37"W x 23"D. Very good overall condition. There are some losses to the finish and characteristic separations and cracks in the wood. Chinese late 19th century two door softwood wardrobe cabinet in a rustic rosewood colored finish. A separate two door hat cabinet fits on top of the chest. Tortoise shell bamboo forms the legs and frames the backrest on this 19th century Chinese chair. A sketch of two birds on a branch decorates bamboo slats set within the backrest framework. The chair folds flat for storage. A nice example of the strength and durability of bamboo, this piece is in very good condition. Dimensions: height 30" (76 cm), width 47" (120 cm), depth 20" (51 cm).
Among the most appealing pieces of furniture to come out of provincial China are deep red cabinets that were made in a variety of sizes and handpainted with scenes or symbolic designs. Many of them originated in Shanxi Province in Western China where this small cabinet was made.
