A wood carving of several animals; one end depicts a pig face, another end is a bird and thirdly a small bird leaning on larger bird. This rare seen carving possibly is a mythological figure of special significance from one of China’s minority groups.

A very rare double side carved walnut wood Bi Xie plaque. One side is Ba Gua and the other side is incantation. ‘Ba Gua’ (literally eight trigram). It is one of the ancient Chinese auguries. These trigrams symbols are used to represent all natural phenomena as described in the ancient Chinese text of divination, Yi Jing (the Book of Changes). Bi Xie in Chinese means to ward off evils. This lovely, sweet boy figure carved from one piece of wood is finished with full gilt paint. Golden boy is one of the auspicious figures in Chinese fairy tales. Excellent condition.
Rare dated Xianfeng reign (1851-1861) image of a Guanyin seated on lotus base from Southern China. The original dedication was found in a niche on the back and may be seen in enlargements. The face has a serene demeanor, there are the typical few bug holes, checks and part of the crown are chipped. Overall a fine piece for this genre and period. H: 26cm/10.2in and W: 11.5cm/2.8in.

Old (First half of the 20th ce) Lion Dance Mask from the Tujia or Zhuang minority. Probably from Hunan Province, this unique mask was sourced in Guangxi Zhuang Province in 1993. Condition: Excellent, no cracks or repairs. Original paint with “Wang (King)” Chinese character on forehead. I have seen quite a few of these sorts of masks in my travels and this the only one I have seen that so much resembles in style the art of the Northwest Coastal American Indians.
