This rare Door of Hope doll represents a Buddhist priest or monk who is dressed in a long coarse “saffron” muslin coat with three frog closures. Ca. 1920. Beneath his muted light olive green-colored cotton outer coat, he wears blue cotton trousers and a blue cotton inner robe layered over another robe made of white cotton. Fine Zhuang minority textile from Guangxi Zhuang/Guizhou province. Woven in two panels with silk embroidered “diamond and star” patterned border. There is a small repair noted in enlargements, minor fading at the bottom and a few minor holes- all consistent with an old piece, some orange and brighter purple silk thread seem to be a later embellishment, indicating that this piece has been handed down several generations and highlights the well toned abrash of the original pattern. Exceptionally fine Zhuang minority textile from Guangxi Zhuang/Guizhou province. Woven in two panels with elaborate silk embroidered meander swastika border. Please note the variety of symbols, even symmetry, and inner borders matching up on the two panels are the hallmarks of the finest weaving skills. DESCRIPTION: A large Chinese boxwood toggle (Guajian) carved as a pair of men’s shoes resting side by side, a symbol of marital harmony and the wish for sons. Very nicely carved in relief with the fine-grained boxwood having a wonderful, aged patina from years of use. There are two circular “lu” (riches) ideographs on the toes (a wish for wealth). A rare find of a tall Chinese painting. Color on fabric. 30ft tall. 25 Buddhas, Boddhisattvas, and lots of Daoist Gods. 15" by 30 ft. Roller wood ends. It was brought to U.S by an American missionary in 1930s. Expect to see stains, wears and tears. Few holes on top area. Condition overall is very good. Circa 19th C. or earlier. No signature or any seal. This is a truly good worshipped artifact.
