Rare Large Chinese Song Dynasty / Dali Kingdom Buddhist Jar
with TL Test
This rare large pottery jar has been excavated from a Buddhist site in Yunnan province and dates to the Dali Kingdom (AD 937 - 1253), coinciding roughly with the time of the Song Dynasty (AD 960 - 1279) elsewhere in China.

A Dong-Khe (Tongqi) ware double-gourd vase entwined with a chilong dragon. The ware emanates from the district close to Tehua where the famous Blanc de Chine was produced and the wares developed along similar lines though Tehua had the advantage of having a superb translucent porcelain paste. Two Chinese Han dynasty molded pottery chickens, each standing with tail feathers out and head up. Circa 3rd century. 3 1/8”H x 4 3/8"L and 2 ¾”H x 3 1/2"L. Very good overall condition. The larger chicken (which might be a rooster) has traces of black, white, and red pigment remaining. There is a small loss on the larger chicken's side (see enlargement 10). Very rare and unusual Chinese painted pottery granary with cyclindrical shape, overhanging roof, supported by three legs in the shape of bears, original red, black and white pigments remaining. It is very difficult to find painted granary like this.
