DESCRIPTION: A Chinese ivory belt hook, the front carved in high relief with a butterfly and Buddha hand citron growing on a vine, the top “hook” ending in a ruyi-shaped head. With a lovely creamy patina, this carving dates circa 1900 and is in very good condition. DIMENSIONS: 4 ½” long (11.5 cm).
DESCRIPTION: A stained ivory netsuke of three mice climbing on (and nibbling their way into) a loaf of bread. This netsuke is in very good condition, is probably Chinese carved, and dates from the mid 1900’s. DIMENSIONS: 2” long (5 cm) x 1 ¼” high (3.2 cm).
DESCRIPTION: What a beauty this is! This expertly carved ivory export box is covered with a profusion of flowers, including the flower-shaped knob on the lid. Peonies, asters, daisies, chrysanthemums and iris, all in a riot of bloom, sprawl across the surfaces. Dating circa 1890 – 1920, this box is in amazing condition; we have examined it carefully with a loupe and can find no chips, losses or repairs anywhere. DESCRIPTION: A wonderful antique Chinese ivory toggle in oval disk form, each side carved with two confronting horned dragons among the clouds, both grasping at a lone pearl. This amazing toggle is carved in high relief from one piece of ivory and has been pierced from top to bottom with a vertical hole for threading the cord. DESCRIPTION: A fine, rare and very old Chinese ivory toggle, carved in the form of a muyu, or “wooden fish” (a wooden temple percussion instrument) with two facing dragon heads at the handle. The oval toggle is wedge shaped with the bottom slightly thicker than the handle, and on each side are incised Chinese characters. Dating from the 18th to early 19th century, the ivory has a wonderful aged patina with superficial age fissures.
