A Chinese ivory plaque carved very deeply( almost three layers), with the typical Cantonese scenes of figures in pavilions and gardens. It is an unusual and desirable item partly because of the depth of the carving which graduates from 10mm on the upper part of to 15mm on the lower section; the gilding of the back and the thickness of the tusk used ( 25mm at its thickest). A Chinese ivory card case of exceptional thickness, one face which is slightly domed- shaped is deeply carved with a profusion of flowers and foliage against a diaper ground . The reverse which is flat has shallower relief with scenes of figures in pavilions and a vacant cartouche. As I don’t know anything about ivory, if this were a jade carving by the style I’d say Ming or earlier, I believe the old natural wear backs this up. I bought this in Xian, 1987 in front of the Terra Cotta Warriors Site entrance when the farmers were allowed have a “flea market”. Anyway this little piece speaks for itself, either you like its simplicity or you don’t. L: 3.5cm and W: 9mm.
